The Eight Step Process

At Seminole, the phrase "Open the doors, close the gap!" is not just a motto, it is a way of life. From the time we enter the building to the very end of the day, we are striving to improve student achievement. By following the eight steps explained below, we are working to discover what our students weak areas are and increase the amount of instruction they receive in those areas.

Eight Steps to Student Success

Step 1: Test Score Disaggregation
Teachers disaggregated state standard test scores to identify instructional groups and identify weak and strong objective areas.

Step 2: Timeline Development
Teachers developed an instructional timeline that encompasses all objective areas and time allocations based on the needs of the student group and the weight of the objective. Meaning, depending on how difficult an objective or concept is, teachers may spend more or less time teaching it.

Step 3: Instructional Focus
Using the instructional timeline, teachers created and disseminated an instructional focus calendar stating the objectives, target areas, instructional dates, and assessment dates. Lessons were then created and delivered by teachers. The instructional focus time occurs every morning from 8:45-9:00 in all classrooms.

Step 4: Assessment
After the instructional focus is taught, each teacher administers a test to identify students that did or did not master that week's objective.

Step 5: Tutorials
After each assessment, teachers provide tutorial time to re-teach the concept to students who have not yet mastered it.

Step 6: Enrichment
After each assessment, teachers also provide objective-related enrichment for students who mastered the concept. The enrichment and tutorial steps of this process are known as Team Time. Every day from 2:45-3:15 students break into small groups to review the previous week's objective.

Step 7: Maintenance
Teachers continue to reinforce the skills that have been taught on a regular basis.

Step 8: Monitoring
Teachers and administrators monitor the process and the progress on an ongoing basis.
