Attendance Policy & Procedures

The compulsory attendance law is designed to require school attendance and to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to receive an education.

Compulsory Education under Michigan State Law
MCL 380.1561 (1) The Michigan compulsory attendance law requires every parent, guardian and/or other person who has the charge of a child from the age of 6-16 to send the child to a public, or state approved non-public school…

It is important that student attend all classes, on-time every day. Daily attendance is necessary for school success. Daily teaching, classroom discussions, lectures, explanations, audio-visuals etc… cannot be duplicated. Therefore, students missing school miss crucial parts of instruction when they are absent. Future employers are interested in students with high quality work ethic, dependability and being on-time to work every day.

  • Discuss the importance of good attendance with your children.
  • Thank you for scheduling your appointments after school hours.
  • Please notify Mount Clemens High School of any address, telephone and/or emergency contact changes.

 Accepted Excused Absences:

  • Funeral
  • Medical injury or illness with documentation
  • Family emergency
  • Legal appointment with proper notification

You will be notified via Edu-Link (computer notification) of all unexcused absences.

After five (5) absences, the parent/guardian will be contacted by the student’s teacher by telephone or mail. A copy will be retained in the student’s file.

After ten (10) absences, the parent/guardian will be contacted by the Attendance Office to arrange a meeting to discuss the student’s attendance. Documentation will continue in the student’s file.

After fifteen (15) absences, the parent/guardian MUST meet with the Accountability Officer to discuss the student’s attendance. Macomb County Attendance Officers will be contacted about excessive absences. Documentation will continue in the student’s file.

Tardy Policy

Students are expected to be in their seats, in the classroom before the bell rings. If students are tardy due to discussions with the previous hour’s teacher, they MUST bring a pass from the sending teacher. Using the telephone, purchasing refreshments or bathroom usage will NOT be considered a valid excuse.

The school tardy policy is as follows:

  • 1-3 tardies warning and telephone call home.
  • 4 tardies lunch detention and contact from the attendance office
  • 8 tardies two (2) lunch detentions
  • >10 tardies in house suspension
Thank you for encouraging your student (s) to be “ON TIME” for all classes.
